Dance Photography with Stefi

When doing a shoot outdoors, if the weather forecast is quite ambiguous I like to pick a location with some covered areas in case it starts raining. The Shore in Leith is a great location for that. On a good day, there are plenty of spots to chose from. On the day of the dance shoot with Stefi, however, we were not so lucky as it started to rain shortly after we met. Fortunately, I knew of a covered area where we could shoot.

The place is quite bland colourwise, so I decided to put my camera on tungsten white balance and light Stefi with CTO (orange) gelled flashes to give the photos a moody feel. Using a tungsten white balance during daylight gives the pictures a blue colour cast. The CTO gels on the flashes correct for that colour cast and insure proper daylight colours on Stefi. We spent an hour, hour and a half, on a very productive session.

I started experimenting with the reflections in the window.

I had Stefi look toward the light for this one.

We went through quite a few poses.

Again making sure Stefi looked at the light camera right.

I changed the lighting set up to one light behind Stefi camera right and one camera left to light her from the front.

The flexibility of dancers never ceases to amaze me.

Shooting this required good timing.

The horizontal composition works better when trying to include the dancer’s reflection in the window.

This composition shows more of the location, with leading lines guiding you out of it.

Since our options had been severely limited by the weather, we decided to set up another shoot in Stockbridge. We first started at Mckenzie bridge, one of my favourite locations.

I don’t do much Black & White, but I thought this series of photos looked best in monochrome.
One light camera left on Stefi to make her pop out of the background.

I love the lines shapes and textures this location provides.

Lighting the background with blue gelled flashes gives this photo a night feel.

Later in the evening, we moved to Circus Lane for some action shots.

After the jumps, we did a few poses. This is the one chosen by Stefi.
