Blackford Pond Photoshoot with Delighters

The initial idea was for Jusztina Hermann of Delighters Theatre and I to do some light painting in the forest near Blackford Pond. Jusztina suggested we met a little early to take some “regular” photos.

Blackford Pond is a very picturesque location, particularly during spring and summer. I decided to use a long lens with a wide aperture to compress the background and isolate my subject. A single speedlight in a softbox was used to light Jusztina.

Underexposing the background gives more saturated colours, but I need to light my subject for her to be properly exposed.

Light to camera right. Pond on the left.

It is usually best for the subject to look in the direction of the light, but sometimes breaking the rules works.

Going through many poses with the hoop.

The possibilities seem endless.

A small change in the pose can give quite a different photograph.

Last pose for this series.

It is always a good idea to turn around 180 degrees and see what the location looks like from that new point of view. It’s an easy way to double your output. That is precisely what I did on this occasion.

Tried some kneeling poses.

This time, the light is camera left. The pond is on the right.

Changing to a vertical composition for variety.

Which do you prefer: looking at the camera or looking away?

My favourite of the series. I like the negative space between the hoop and Jusztina.

Come to see the show.

Finally, when the light levels were getting low, we headed towards the forest to do some light paintings.

We just loved the ferns and the old tree.

And now for something different.
