I hadn’t done a shoot with my aerialist friend Rosella in a while. It was a good excuse to practice my lighting skills. We shot at Room to Move and the background is particularly unappealing. Fortunately, with the proper lighting, the background can be made really dark and nearly completely black in post-production.<\/p>\n

Wasn’t quite sure if I should frame his horizontally, but as Rosella could only hold the pose for a short time, this is the only framing I could get.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The poses are generally difficult to hold for a long time, so it was essential for me to shoot fast. Not always easy to properly focus in a dark room and compose the shots in a very few seconds. And lighting white outfits is always a little tricky.<\/p>\n

Shooting as many poses as I could. The choice was ultimately left to Rosella.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In this kind of situation, I like to put two lights at the back to give rim lights that really separate the subject from the background. And in this case, I also had one light camera left as the main light. All three lights were bare manual speed lights. The main light has to be positioned carefully so as not to spill on the background and reveal all the junk back there.<\/p>\n

Rosella may be the only person I’ve photographed almost as many times upside down and upright.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Rosella is very skilled at aerial arts and makes it look effortless. But some of these poses are incredibly difficult to do and require great strength.<\/p>\n

Some poses are challenging to frame, such as this one. I usually like to fill the frame as much as possible with my subject, which is not always possible.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
