Jusztina Hermann of Delighter\u2019s theatre and I decided to have another go at a fire photoshoot. Our first attempt didn\u2019t work out because by the time we got to the fire part of the shoot on Portobello beach (see this post<\/a>), the light levels got too low for the dynamic range of the camera.<\/p>\n

I had a successful attempt at fire photography in the Roslin forest with Annie<\/a>, so we thought we\u2019d give Blackford Hill a go. We got lucky as the light in that autumn forest was magical. I still used a single speed light on Jusztina to make her pop out of the background.<\/p>\n

The first set up involved a big flame burst and it took me a bit of trial and error to get my timing right. Sometimes, you are so eager to get the shot that you press the shutter too early. Then you overcompensate and are late. Finally, you manage to get your timing spot on.<\/p>\n

I managed to catch the fire ball on the second wave of the sword as my timing was a bit off at the beginning.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Same here. Once I had my timing right I could get shot after shot. But Jusztina ran out of the substance that gives the fire this explosive burst.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

We then moved on to the regular fire sword, and two of them.<\/p>\n

As the sun was at camera right, I put a speed light on Jusztina to remove potential nasty shadows on her face.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Fire hoops were the last set up for the day as the sun was going down fast.<\/p>\n

The fire hoops don’t work as well with this background as the fire doesn’t really “pop” as in the fire ball pics.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

We tried some pics with the hoops in motion and it took quite a few tries to get a few good ones.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

One last close up. As you can see the sun disappeared behind the hill, leaving the location in the shade.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
