{"id":231,"date":"2013-11-14T13:06:38","date_gmt":"2013-11-14T13:06:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/philippemonthoux.com\/blog\/?p=231"},"modified":"2020-03-19T13:27:43","modified_gmt":"2020-03-19T13:27:43","slug":"impressionist-photography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/philippemonthoux.com\/blog\/impressionist-photography\/","title":{"rendered":"Impressionist Photography"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The name impressionism comes from the title of a Claude Monet painting, \u201cImpression, sunrise\u201d.\u00a0 It depicts the harbour of \u201cLe Havre\u201d, France. To create his masterpiece, Monet used loose brush strokes. As he put it later, \u201clandscape is nothing but an impression\u201d. His painting conveys the feeling of what it was like to be there, but doesn\u2019t contain much fine detail.<\/p>\n<p>In many ways, the impressionists\u2019\u00a0 way to look at the world went against the rules of academic painting. It took some time for their work to become accepted by the public and the art establishment.<\/p>\n<p>Photography is a medium of supreme realism. Therefore the title of this blog post, impressionist photography, may sound like an oxymoron. But sometimes the exquisite detail produced by today\u2019s cameras can be a distraction. The frame is too busy and the image doesn\u2019t really convey the essence of the scene as the photographer experienced it. It is possible to eliminate the fine details in the photographs by means of several techniques. One of them is the use of multiple exposures and the other involves using camera movement to blur the details out. These are illustrated in the two photographs below, taken on Blackford Hill, Edinburgh.
