A beach location can give you wonderful pictures, but it is not without some challenges. You will have noticed that sand can get anywhere, and the last place you want sand in is in your digital camera while changing lenses. Also, as the weather can change on a dime in Scotland, you never know if you are going to have to go for the dark and moody skies or the gorgeous sunset. Strong winds can also be an issue. But don’t let that deter you from a beach photo shoot. The potential rewards far exceed the hassles.<\/p>\n

On this day with Rosella Elphinstone (whom you may remember from a previous blog post<\/a>), it did not start too well as we were treated to a few light rain showers. But in the end, we got to enjoy a colourful sunset sky.<\/p>\n

In all the photographs in this post, I did underexpose the background by nearly two stops. Underexposure gives you more saturated colours, which is something I like. Since I didn\u2019t want my subject, Rosella to be underexposed as well, I lit her with a speedlight camera left.<\/p>\n

I had to shoot relatively quickly as I knew we may only have that colourful background for a short amount of time. Especially given the fire petering out at regular intervals and the wind making it quite difficult to light the hoop again.<\/p>\n
