Trapeze Shoot with Rosella

This trapeze shoot with Rosella Elphinstone and Sarah Lake (see next blog post) of Dair Entertainment took place at Dance Base. Their studio 3 allows one to rig silks, hoops or trapeze.

I first wanted to hone my skills on the new lighting scheme I tried with Zoja Dravai in our chains shoot. Practice makes perfect. Two speedlights at the back in the frame and one main light to camera left or right to light Rosella’s face.

The tricky part is filling the frame without cutting any hand, foot or light.

I really like the effect of the back light on her hair.

This is really painful.

I had to frame, focus and shoot as quickly as possible.

I really like this lighting scheme.

The studio 3 at Dance Base also allows one to shoot against a light coloured background. For this set up I kept the two back lights but moved them out of the frame and the third light in front camera left or right depending on Rosella’s pose.

Elongated poses are more difficult to light.

I had to pay attention not to cut a bit of the trapeze.

In hindsight, I wish I had moved a tad to the left so you could see both her feet.

I had done this pose with her friend Sarah and she wanted a similar picture.

I asked Rosella to look in the direction of the light.

I really like this.
