Music Photography with Norman Lamont Band

Organising a photoshoot for a band can be a bit of a challenge. Typically the various members have their own separate lives and thus finding a time they are all available isn’t straightforward. There is a notable exception, though, and that is the day and time they practice together.

So it was with Norman Lamont and the Heaven Sent. The photoshoot took place at the rehearsal studio where they regularly meet for practice. I quickly noticed the red curtains in the background and the sofa. Note their wasn’t much else in the room save for the regular band gear, so the set up worked itself out. I used my biggest softbox at camera right to light the band on the sofa. Then it was up to me to direct my subjects to get some memorable expressions. With four people it is very difficult to get all of them to look great in the same picture, so some Photoshop swapping may be in order.

You can get some good pics early in the shoot, before your subject become too self-conscious.

All the band members looking in the same direction. A radically new concept in music photography.

At some point Norman had to leave to answer the door. I quickly fired a shot of the other three band members and everyone loved the pic. Fortunately, I had plenty of photos with Norman in the back, so I simply Photoshopped him in.
