Several months ago, I collaborated with the heavy rock band Dolarhyde on a band portrait photo. They are an Edinburgh-based band who cite Alice in Chains, Metallica, Tool, Korn, Black Stone Cherry, Iron Maiden, Anthrax, and System of a Down as their influences.
We set up to shoot in their rehearsal studio. In this type of setting, my technique of choice is light painting. I can hide a lot of the background by not lighting it. By only lighting the band members and their instruments, I create a high contrast and moody photograph that musicians typically like. This style is perfectly suited to a havy rock band.
The band liked the picture below very much. I was also pretty satisfied with the result.
