A blend of art, nature, and the grace of dance converged during my recent photoshoot with the talented dancer, Holly Wilson, at Roslin Park, Scotland. Renowned for its lush greenery and serene landscapes, Roslin Park provided a perfect backdrop to capture the essence of dance in the heart of nature. We utilized three main locations for this shoot: a hollow tree, a fallen tree, and the picturesque bridge over the river, each contributing uniquely to the visual narrative.
The Hollow Tree: Embracing Nature’s Embrace
Our first location, the hollow tree, with its rough, textured bark and intricate patterns, provided a stark contrast to Holly’s graceful and fluid movements. As she positioned herself next to the tree, I aimed to highlight the juxtaposition between the dancer’s dynamic motion and the tree’s static, yet living presence. The green canopy above-filtered sunlight, creating a soft, natural spotlight that accentuated her poses. This interplay of light and shadow added depth and dimension to the images, enhancing the organic feel of the shoot.
The Fallen Tree: Grounded Elegance
Moving to our second location, a fallen tree on the ground, we explored themes of resilience and transformation. The fallen tree, with its sprawling branches and roots exposed, symbolized the continuity of life and nature’s ever-changing form. She climbed on the trunk, and her movements reflected both the grounded stability of the tree and the delicate balance of dance. The vibrant greenery surrounding the fallen tree was a lush, verdant backdrop, emphasizing the harmony between the dancer and the natural environment. I had asked Holly to wear something red, orange or yellow that would provide good colour contrast with the background. I was very pleased with her choice of outfit.
The Bridge Over the River: A Poetic Crossing
The final location, the bridge over the river, introduced an element of fluidity and transition to the shoot. Bridges often symbolize journeys and connections, and in this setting, it became a metaphor for the flow of dance and the passage of time. The gentle river below, flanked by dense greenery, provided a tranquil yet dynamic background. Holly chose poses that showcased her athletic ability. On the composition side of things, I was able to use the rails of the bridge as leading lines to Holly. I also placed her in the centre of the fame to emphasize the symmetry of the bridge.
