Dance Photography with Sam

I changed my usual way of working on this day. It was perfectly fine as this was a personal project and not a client commission. I usually start with set-ups I’ve used before so I can get some shots “in the bag” and then get more experimental. On this shoot though, I started to experiment with dancer movement and long exposures, something I had wanted to try for a while. I wanted to make sure we had enough time to get some interesting photos, as you can see below.

I used a speedlight in a soft box (camera left) to freeze my subject at the end of a long exposure.

It takes quite a few photos to get some good ones. I was quite happy with the results for a first try at the technique.

We then moved on to more traditional dance photographs, including some jump shots. The photoshoot took place at the Edinburgh College dance studios and I used a couple of speedlights to light Sam. Since it takes a few seconds for the flashes to recycle, there was no way to use burst mode on my camera for rapid fire. I could only take one shot at a time, so I needed to get my timing spot on. It’s harder than you think.

I’d say this is my second favourite shot of the session. Just love the hair!
This kind of photo is much easier to take than the jump shots, as one has a few more tenths of a second to do so.

Finally, we ended the session with some light paintings. I love playing with mirrors. They can be quite challenging for “regular” photography, but since my light painting technique involves multiple shots combined to form the final image, it was relatively easy to photoshop myself out of the frame.

This is my favourite shot from that day. I love the mirror effect and the look one gets from light painting.

I like this light painting too. But for me, the composition doesn’t work as well as in the previous photo.

I prefer this vertical composition to the picture above. What do you think?
