Dance Photography with Anna

I wanted to do more photoshoots at night. For a couple of reasons. The first is that I really am a night person. I like the still and quiet mood of night time. The second reason is that provided I only need to light a relatively small area, I can have total control of the lighting (and hence the mood of the photographs) with a couple of speedlights.

The old town of Edinburgh provides some wonderful locations for night shoots. Anna and I decided to shoot near St Giles Cathedral.

In the first set up, I used the lines and shapes of the location to frame Anna. One light behind her and one camera left to create a moody atmosphere.

I love the mood from this lighting set up.

Had to make sure her face was properly lit.

For the remaining pics I adjusted the position of the light camera left.

Framing within a frame. A classic composition tool.

We could have shot there for much longer, but it was pretty cold and I wanted to do another set up.

We only had to move a little bit to find these stairs to the right of St Giles entrance. A speedlight on top of the stairs with a blue gel to create a pattern behind the dancer, and one speedlight on Anna. It doesn’t have to be complicated.

Graphic elements such as lines always add to your composition

I prefer this one to the one above, but most people seem to disagree with me.

Another version of the splits.
