Dance Photography in Grassmarket, Edinburgh

I had wanted to do a shoot at the Vennel Viewpoint in Grassmarket for a while. From that vantage point, you get a great view of Edinburgh castle.

This kind of location looks best during the blue hour, especially with overcast weather. Not that we have any of that in Scotland.

I met with a couple of dancers, Abbie and Sophy, for a shoot after sunset. We started with the classic set up featuring Edinburgh castle in the background.

I had a speedlight on Abbie camera left (see shadow on the ground). She would have been pretty dark otherwise.

The sky is significantly darker in this photo as it was taken about 15 minutes after the one above. The sky would turn nearly black another 20 minutes or so after that.

The blue hour doesn’t last for long, and eventually the sky turned black. In this case, I had to look for compositions that excluded the sky. I first focussed on the foliage (to provide colour) shown in the bottom right of the above pictures.

You can’t go wrong with a jump shot

It hurts just looking at this, doesn’t it?

Then looking up the stairs with a levelled camera I was also able to eliminate the sky from the composition.

I wish I had moved the camera a smudge to the right to avoid merging Abbie’s face with the foliage.

I like this composition better than the one above.
