Dance Photography in Glasgow

Shooting dancers on location offers a number of challenges. In Scotland, weather can be a main concern, especially when travelling to an other city. You just don’t want to travel 60 miles to find the shoot has to be postponed because of torrential rain.

This is why I suggested to Alexandra, my dancer model for the day, to look for a covered location, with elements of design such as lines. It turned out there is a train overpass close to where she lived that totally fulfilled the requirements.

This is my favourite picture. I really liked the repeating pattern of the metallic beams and the leading line provided by the rail.

My second favourite from this setup. It shows a wider view of the location with an implied vanishing point.

I liked this side of the overpass better, because of the light coming from the buildings and traffic underneath.

I let the dancer choose which pictures they like . A good dance photograph is as much about the pose as the lighting and composition. I can figure out the latter, but the dancers are way better at choosing the former.

The above pictures were taken a little later than I had wanted. It turns out there was a concert next door and at the end of the show people started pouring in the overpass. We had to wait about fifty minutes before we could resume the shoot. But all the traffic of the concert goers heading home added a lot to what would have been a rather dull exterior.  Our favourite pictures from earlier in the shoot are shown below.

I usually like to shoot night photos shortly after sunset, when the sky turns a deep shade of blue. This is my favourite frame taken before the interruption from the concert goers.
