Cherry Blossoms on the Meadows

The light was just magical on this Sunday morning. I had scheduled a photo shoot with my long time collaborator and circus artist Jusztina Hermann.

The cherry blossoms were in full bloom, and with the raking sunlight, the Meadows were replete with photo opportunities.

My favourite kind of light is backlight, and I placed Jusztina and the cheery blossoms to have the sun at about 10 o’clock. I wanted to give the images a lifestyle vibe, namely without deep shadows. In order to achieve this, I used an off camera flash as a fill light.  For a really shallow depth of field, I used my 85mm f/1.4.

We started with some poses. First, balancing six hoops.

We then tried some action shots.

I missed a lot of shots before I got this one.

Some juggling.

Got back to posing for a while. My second favourite shot of the day.

Final action shot for the day.

The second set up involved the path under the cherry blossoms. I spent a good deal of time during the lockdown working on compositing tutorials, creating my versions of their images. I was dying to try some composites of my own. I had shown the images from these tutorials to Jusztina and she loved the idea of levitation. This was the perfect location to try it. For that photograph, I switched to my 80-400mm at the longest focal length. I wanted to compress the scene to a maximum. As the sunlight was only producing a rim  light on the legs of Jusztina, I used a flash behind her camera right to produce a rim light over her entire body.

Both Jusztina and I were delighted with the result. My favourite image of the day.

Back with the 85mm f/1.4, we got some final hoop shots.

Same pose as the first photograph, but on the path.

The same pose looks great from behind as well.

This called for a horizontal composition.

For these three last images, I also use a flash camera right as a fill light.
