Aerial Duo Straps with Rosella and Sarah

Rosella and Sarah of Dair Entertainment were looking for some promo photographs for their duo straps act. The photoshoot took place at Room to Move.

The ladies wanted to go dark and moody and wore black outfits. I also had to go with a black background. The place is cluttered and there is no way to get a clean background unless one underexposes it so much it effectively goes black. That adds a number of constraints when it comes to lighting, because you don’t want any light on the background. Coupled with the black outfits, I had a serious challenge on my hands.

I went with a three light set up. Two rim lights to separate the ladies from the background and a light in front, camera right or left depending on the pose..

The dual act is all about shapes and symmetry.

This is a lot harder than you think.

I wish there would be a smudge more light on Rosella’s right calf.

Just managed to get a slice of light on Rosella’s face.

The light in front was to camera left in this picture.

For this, I wish I had brought a reflector to put on the ground, and bounce a light in it to brighten the faces a little more.

When I knew we had enough photos “in the bag”, I went for some experimentation. I wanted to try silhouettes (except for a rim light) on a black background. So I move the light that was in front and placed it behind the ladies. It took some trial and error to get it placed just right. But in the end, we were all pleased with the result.

I like this look. It really helps Rosella and Sarah both have long blond hair.

My favourite of the shoot.
