Light Painting a Violinist

Joana is a violinist from Portugal currently studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow. She agreed to help me with my personal light painting project. It was winter time and therefore best to shoot indoors. She proposed to use one of the rehearsal rooms at the Conservatoire. I didn’t know what to expect and it turned out to be quite a challenging location. Nevertheless, I believe with light painting one can make the most ordinary looking place interesting.

I first was intrigued by the reflections in the piano and using the keyboard as a leading line to Joana.

Having the plain looking studio background go totally dark adds drama to this portrait.

There was a mirror in the room and I just had to take advantage of it, for what tuned out to be my favourite photo of the session.

I totally love reflections.

Finally, Joana suggested to spread her sheet music all over the floor for a couple more light paintings.

I wasn’t completely sold on the pose at the time (I am now) …..
